Changes to Australian Skilled occupations

The Department of Jobs and Small Business is responsible for undertaking regular reviews of Skilled Occupation Lists. These occupation lists are used for skilled migration to meet the needs of the Australian economy.

This page provides the list of proposed occupations that may change. These lists include; Short-Term Skilled Occupation List, the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List and the Regional Occupation List. which underpin a range of employer-sponsored, points-tested and state-nominated visa programs.

These proposed changes are for consultation purposes only. It does not represent a decision of Government.

If an occupation does not appear on the Traffic Light Bulletin, then no change is proposed to the status of that occupation. Stakeholders are encouraged to make a submission in relation to any occupation they are interested in, even if no change is flagged at this time.

Occupation list changes – 17 January 2018

The changes to the occupation lists have been announced. These changes will apply from today, 17 January 2018.

MIA members should also note that a number of occupations that were not previously available for the Subclass 407 Training visa have now been aligned for that visa.

Legislative instruments – occupation list changes

The following legislative instruments specify the changes to the occupation lists for various visa subclasses.

Legislative Instrument –  F2018L00044 – IMMI 18/004 – Specification of Occupations -Subclass 457 Visas

This Instrument specifies the eligible MLTSSL and STSOL occupations for this visa for applications made on or after 17 January 2018.

Nominations for occupations specified in the previous instrument, IMMI 17/060, lodged before 17 January 2018 will not be affected by these changes.

Visa applications related to nominations lodged before 17 January 2018 will not be affected by these changes, whether the visa application was made before or after 17 January 2018.

This Instrument commences 17 January 2018 and repeals IMMI 17/060.

 

Legislative Instrument – F2018L00045 – IMMI 18/005 – Specification of Occupations and Assessing Authorities—Subclass 186 Visas

This Instrument specifies the eligible MLTSSL and STSOL occupations and skills assessing authorities forDIRECT ENTRY visa applications made on or after 17 January 2018.

Nominations for occupations specified in the previous instrument, IMMI 17/080, lodged before 17 January 2018 will not be affected by these changes.

Visa applications related to nominations lodged before 17 January 2018 will not be affected by these changes, whether the visa application was made before or after 17 January 2018.

**Note – there is no list for Temporary Residence Transition Subclass 186.

This Instrument commences 17 January 2018 and repeals IMMI 17/080.

 

Legislative Instrument – F2018L00047 – IMMI 18/006: Specification of Occupations – Subclass 407 Visas

This Instrument specifies the eligible MLTSSL and STSOL occupations for this visa for applications made on or after 17 January 2018.

The Instrument adds 41 eligible occupations to the MLTSSL and 3 eligible occupations to the STSOL for this visa subclass.

Nominations for occupations specified in the previous instrument, IMMI 17/071, lodged before 17 January 2018 and related visa applications will not be affected by these changes.

This Instrument commences 17 January 2018 and repeals IMMI 17/071.

 

Skilled occupations for Subclasses 189, 190, 489 and 485

Legislative Instrument – F2018L00046 – IMMI 18/007: Specification of Occupations and Assessing Authorities

This Instrument specifies occupations that are skilled occupations for the purposes of visa Subclasses 189, 190, 489 and 485, and the assessing authorities for these occupations.

Skilled occupations

Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) or Subclass 489 (Skilled Regional Provisional)

  • visas not nominated by a state or territory authority
  • for persons and their spouses/defacto partners
  • issued an invitation on or after 17 January 2018

skilled occupations are those on the MLTSSL including occupations marked with a ‘Y’ in column 4 of this Instrument.

** For invitations issued before 17 January 2018, the previous Instrument will continue to apply

Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate)

  • visas applied for on or after 17 January 2018

skilled occupations are those on the MLTSSL including those marked with a ‘Y’ in column 4 of this Instrument.

** For applications lodged before 17 January 2018, the previous Instrument will continue to apply

Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated)  

  • nominated by a state or territory authority
  • for persons and their spouses/defacto partners
  • issued an invitation on or after 17 January 2018

skilled occupations are those on the MLTSSL and STSOL, excluding those marked with a ‘Y’ in column 4 of this Instrument.

** For invitations issued before 17 January 2018, the previous Instrument will continue to apply

Subclass 489 (Skilled Regional Provisional) 

  • nominated by a state or territory authority
  • for persons and their spouses/defacto partners
  • issued an invitation on or after 17 January 2018

skilled occupations are those on the MLTSSL excluding ‘Y’ and STSOL including ‘Y’  in column 4 of this Instrument.

** For invitations issued before 17 January 2018, the previous Instrument will continue to apply

 

Skills assessing authorities 

The assessing authority for the occupation “accountant (general)” (ANZSCO 221111) has beenchanged from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Australia (ICAA) to Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ).

This Instrument commences 17 January 2018 and repeals IMMI 17/080.

 

RSMS – DE and TRT skilled occupations

Direct Entry stream

  • no changes have been made to the regional Subclass 187 occupation lists in IMMI 17/058 and IMMI 15/109.

Temporary Residence Transition

  • there is no occupation list requirement for Subclass 187 for this stream.
